Think Big. Start Small. Swap One.
Last week Lucy Byrne from Swap One visited our office to share how we can swap just one high-carbon trip a week for a low-carbon option.
Transport is Nelson’s biggest source of emissions, making up around 58% of our region’s total. With roughly 43,000 fossil-fuelled vehicles on our roads, changing even a few of the trips we make can make a difference.
That’s why we have signed up to Swap One. It’s a local initiative encouraging people to swap some of their usual car trips for walking, biking, taking the bus or carpooling.
In its first year, Swap One participants avoided an estimated 25 tonnes of carbon emissions, about the same as the annual household emissions of 21 people in Nelson. It might seem small on its own, but the more people and workplaces that get involved, the more it adds up.
Thanks to Lucy for coming in and getting our team involved. If your workplace is based in Nelson/Tasman, check out swapone.nz.
